Equestrian

YMCA Camp Ockanickon offers fun, safe and progressive equestrian programs, which enhance the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.  Our knowledgeable, friendly and fun instructors are lead by a certified Equestrian Director.

The programs are offered in English and Western equipment. However, our focus on the skill fundamentals are the same no matter which saddle you ride.

Even though riding is an important part of any equestrian program, Camp focuses on teaching positive horsemanship and values, whether in the saddle or on the ground.  As horse people, we need to learn about the horse as much as the riding.  We need to learn their behaviors and personalities.

Each equestrian program is available for an additional fee.  Classes are scheduled by ability.

All programs require the rider to be at least eight (8) years of age at the time of the program, except for pony rides lead by Equestrian Staff.

Summer Camp

If you are a horse enthusiast or just want an exciting challenge doing something new, our equestrian experience will provide you with some of the most enjoyable memories from Camp.  You can register for one or two weeks, and like many if you sign up for one week you will probably want to sign up for a second week by the end of the first.

Through the two equestrian programs, Camp offers a progressive levels certificate program.  To complete a level, receive a certificate and progress to the next level, each camper must safely demonstrate riding skills and take a written test on horsemanship.

It is important to note that ALL Summer Camp Equestrian programs will take the place of a one or two hour block of the regular Camp schedule.
